How to prepare the plate for seasoning?
Your carbon steel griddle is made from raw material, without any coating. To ensure optimal performance and extend its lifespan, it is essential to season it before first use.
Here are the steps to follow:
- Heat the griddle for 30 to 45 minutes to open the pores of the steel.
- Brush it generously with olive oil using a cloth or absorbent paper, let the oil heat up, then rub the surface of the griddle with a spatula, and remove the residue directly into the firebox.
Repeat this process several times until you have a clean surface.
- You will see the surface gradually turn black: this is completely normal. This natural protective film makes the griddle non-stick and protects it against oxidation.
Over time, the natural fats in the food will strengthen this patina. To speed up the process, you can cook foods high in fat, such as red meat, the first few times you use it.
Recommendation :
- Use olive oil for the first 2 to 3 cooking times.
- Later, you can switch to oils that can withstand higher temperatures, such as sunflower oil or peanut oil.
⚠️ Important: Always handle the plancha with fireproof gloves, especially when adding wood to the firebox or when cleaning while hot.
What is the best method for starting a fire?
To properly light your fire pit, start by using well-seasoned wood with a moisture content of less than 10%. This significantly limits smoke and allows for more efficient combustion. Beech or oak wood is recommended as it produces beautiful, thick embers; ash is also a good option.
Arrange the logs (ideal size: approximately 10 x 35 cm) with the bark facing outwards, taking care not to exceed 5 cm below the surface of the plancha.
Once your small pile is formed, place a firelighter that complies with the EN 1860-3 standard, then carefully light it with a long match. Never use alcohol or gasoline to light or rekindle the fire. Finally, remember to wear protective gloves: the different parts of the fire pit quickly become very hot.
What wood should I use for cooking?
Choose a hardwood that is well-seasoned (less than 20% moisture content), such as beech or ash. Avoid softwoods or tropical woods, which can emit unwanted substances or cause excessive heat. Wood that is too wet or has a high bark content produces more smoke and burns poorly. Avoid species such as fir, sycamore, eucalyptus, or elm.
Can you use charcoal?
Charcoal alone is not recommended as it does not provide sufficient heat for the entire plate. However, you can use it as a supplement: start with wood, then surround it with charcoal to prolong the embers. If you are using a compact model that runs on eco-friendly briquettes, follow the specific recommendations for that format.
What size logs are ideal?
Logs measuring 10 cm by 35 cm offer a good balance between efficient combustion and ease of management. Avoid overly large pieces, which lack oxygen in the center of the fire pit and therefore burn poorly. Some more compact models require shorter logs.
What oil should I use for cooking?
Any vegetable oil is suitable. Olive, sunflower, rapeseed... choose according to your taste. Just be careful not to overheat oils with a low smoke point.
Why create temperature zones?
A well-heated plate allows you to manage several zones: the hotter center is perfect for searing meats, while the cooler exterior allows you to delicately cook fish or vegetables, or simply keep food warm.
Do I need an additional ventilation system?
No, the natural draft from the center of the fireplace is sufficient to fuel the fire. No external ventilation device is necessary.
How to extinguish the fire after use?
The safest method is to let the fire burn out on its own. To speed up the process or make the area safer, you can place a fire cover over the flames. Be careful of the oxygen ingress by removing the cover too soon: this can suddenly rekindle the flames.
How to dispose of hot ashes?
You can let the ashes extinguish naturally in the bottom of the fire pit and remove them through the ash drawer. A small amount of cold water can help speed up the process of completely extinguishing the embers.
What to do with the ashes after each use?
The large ash drawer allows you to empty it every 3-5 uses. Wait until the ash has cooled down completely and dispose of it with your general waste, following local waste management guidelines.
Should I bring my fire pit inside after use?
Our fire pits are designed to withstand the elements, but using a cover or lid to protect the fire pit is strongly recommended. This extends its lifespan and makes it easier to put back into service.
How long does it take to heat the plate?
Depending on the outside temperature and the thickness of the griddle, allow between 15 and 30 minutes. In warm weather, the temperature rises more quickly, while in winter, the process may take longer.
What temperature does the plate reach?
The temperature at the inner edge of the plate can reach up to 300°C, while the outer edge remains around 200°C. These differences allow the creation of varied cooking zones.
My hob has become convex: what should I do?
If the surface of your plate bulges in the center, this indicates a defect in the steel pressing. In this case, it is advisable to contact your dealer to find an appropriate solution.
How to clean the hob?
If food residue remains on the hob, it is important to run the spatula over it directly after cooking and remove it from the hob. It is also recommended to wipe it with a lightly oiled cloth to keep it clean. Do not let a thick layer of residue build up, as it will become difficult to remove. If this happens, place ice cubes on the hot hob and scrape them with the spatula: the residue will disappear quickly.
How to maintain the hob?
After each cleaning, apply a thin layer of oil to prevent rust. A greasing spray is also a good option, as it remains effective longer and is suitable when the plate is cold. If the plate is not used for a while, it is recommended to oil it every 15 to 30 days. The level of corrosion depends heavily on the climate: salty and humid air aggravates it, while dry air is more favorable. Regular use allows a dark, smooth layer to form on the plate, which improves its comfort of use. If this layer flakes in places, simply remove the shavings with the spatula and rub again with clean oil.
How to remove oil stains from Corten steel?
During cooking, it is possible for oil to splash onto the base of the unit. On a Corten steel base, these stains cannot be completely removed. By simply wiping the entire surface with a cloth, the steel will absorb the oil and the base will become evenly colored. However, during rain, slightly oily water may drip from the base, which can cause permanent stains on light-colored stone or wood surfaces.
Can I leave wooden worktops outside?
It is best to store wooden worktops indoors. Since wood is a natural material, it is sensitive to climatic variations.
Why is my Corten steel product not the same color as the one in the brochure?
Corten steel products undergo a controlled corrosion process. Upon delivery, an initial corrosion phase has already begun, but it still takes between six and twelve months for a complete protective layer to form. During this period, the color of the steel may vary from the promotional photos.
My black brazier is damaged, what can I do?
The black finish adds an elegant and refined touch to your fire pit.
The paint used is specially designed to withstand high temperatures, however, its resistance to UV and friction is more limited.
In the event of a scratch, the protection of the steel may be locally reduced, which can lead to the appearance of corrosion.
To prevent any spread, we offer, upon request, a small bottle of paint with a brush for local touch-ups.
To preserve your fire pit:
- Avoid prolonged shocks, scratches or friction.
- Clean only with a soft, non-abrasive cloth.

Where are your products manufactured?
Our fire pits are designed in Montreux, Switzerland. They are then manufactured in Portugal and Asia to ensure the best value for money.
What are the advantages of Corten steel over other materials?
Corten steel is particularly appreciated for its resistance to atmospheric corrosion, its durability and its unique aesthetic. It offers excellent weather resistance, making it an ideal material for fire pits intended for outdoor use.
What are the differences between a stainless steel griddle and a carbon steel griddle?
Stainless steel does not rust, but it has the disadvantage of deforming more easily, requiring greater thickness, having a very high manufacturing cost, and having a lower thermal capacity, which makes it cool down more quickly. In addition, stainless steel is softer and scratches more easily. At Corten House, only carbon steel plates are used: they do not rust if properly seasoned and maintained*, offer excellent heat retention and great robustness in use.
